Meet Terra: Consultant

The women in Terra MacPhail’s life have been a powerful source of inspiration. There’s her mother, who modeled the importance of communication and a strong work ethic; her kokum (grandmother), whose wisdom, resilience, and humour she carries with her; and her daughter, who constantly motivates her to take chances and grow. Terra is also inspired by Indigenous entrepreneurs who have shown it’s possible to excel at the highest levels while staying true to one’s roots.

This blend of legacy and forward momentum is the guiding force behind Terra’s 20-year career – one built on a simple but powerful principle: connection.

“I love the relationship-building aspect of the work I do, especially connecting with people in a way that goes beyond just business,” Terra shares. “I thrive in roles where I can engage in strategic discussions, build trust, and create real opportunities for individuals and organizations.”

That focus on relationships has been the constant in a career that has taken her from graphic design to entrepreneurship, sales, and consulting. As a Cree-Métis woman who honours all her ancestral lines—including Scottish, Polish, Irish, and French—and as a citizen of the Red River Métis Nation, Terra now brings her diverse experience to Pathways, where the combination of her warmth, strategic insight, and determination makes her a natural fit on the team.

“Terra is a wonderful contradiction – both warm and kind but also incredibly sharp and decisive,” says Laurie Sterritt, Pathways’ founder and managing partner. “She is a strong communicator who knows how to get the information she needs to move projects forward. She brings a mature and responsible perspective that make her a fantastic asset to our team.”

For Terra, the work doesn’t end with a successful placement. She’s driven to solve the systemic challenges that can prevent long-term success for Indigenous professionals.

“What is important to me is that it’s the right environment from the start, including ensuring there are long-term retention strategies,” Terra explains. “Some organizations want to recruit Indigenous talent but don’t create workplaces where people can thrive, wanting to check a box rather than make real change. We have to work together to change this.”

Her advice for job seekers reflects her own path of adaptation and growth.

“Take risks early, build strong relationships, and never stop learning,” she advises. “And learn how to sell – yourself and your ideas! Because that’s a skill that will help you no matter what career path you take.”

Wenda Lee Cameron, Pathways’ Director, Administration and Project Management, sees Terra’s dedication every day.

“Her experience is so obvious in the work she does. She’s not afraid to work hard and always wants to understand the big picture so she can contribute in a meaningful way.” Wenda Lee continues, “Terra’s got a unique way of thinking that’s a refreshing reminder we are better together! And her dry delivery is always entertaining!”

While the principle of connection guides her work life, it’s also fundamental to the way Terra recharges. When she steps away from work and her MBA studies, Terra connects back to herself through nature, especially lakes and forests; in her growth through continuous learning; and most importantly, to her family and friends, sharing stories and strengthening the bonds that fuel her journey.

We’re grateful for all you bring to the team, Terra!
