Embedding Indigenous values into organizational culture

While the business of Pathways is executive search and Indigenous recruitment, our work is about so much more! We choose to partner with organizations whose commitment extends beyond meeting diversity targets to fostering environments where Indigenous values and principles guide their approach. Our team has had the privilege of working alongside some of Canada’s leading institutions on transformative journeys to embed Indigenous values into their organizations.

This ongoing blog series looks at some of the different ways our clients and other organizations are weaving Indigenous values into their cultures and operations.

Since 2015, many corporations across Canada have been working to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action. We’ve seen the adoption of reconciliation frameworks like the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP); changes in corporate policies and operational activities involving Indigenous peoples, their lands, and resources; increased emphasis on meaningful consultation prior to development projects; and improved effort to increase equitable access to employment and training.

We have also seen more collaboration, partnerships to build capacity within Indigenous communities and, increasingly, Indigenous communities becoming project owners and partners. And, in some instances, we are seeing organizations trying to find ways to embed Indigenous values into their company cultures.

When we embed Indigenous values into organizational cultures in authentic ways, we create spaces that are truly inclusive, responsive, and equitable. This not only honors Indigenous wisdom and traditions but can also increase resilience, compassion, and broader measures of success. It’s our hope we’ll see more organizations moving beyond checking boxes and embracing the transformative power of Indigenous values in the workplace.

Simon Fraser University and the University of Manitoba are all about the environment and love when it comes to ways they reflect Indigenous values in their cultures.
