Ask Saxon how he’s grown professionally since joining the Pathways team and he’ll talk about confidence.
“I’ve always struggled with it – and it’s something I’m still working on. But working at Pathways—with such lovely, supportive people—I’ve become more confident, and am kinder to myself, too.”
Confidence is a belief in ourselves and our abilities, influencing how we think, feel, and act. It can help us overcome tough situations, inspire us to take risks, and enable us to pursue opportunities that align with our values and aspirations.
In many ways, it’s hard to imagine someone like Saxon could struggle with a lack of confidence. But this is a reminder to not take people at face value. Ever.
Saxon is innately curious, with an academic background studying geographical perspectives of Indigenous history, and concepts of natural resource development, security, history, and international development. Ask him what he likes to do in his time away from work and he talks about adventure!
“Travelling is an opportunity for me to indulge my deep interest and curiosity in our world’s various geographies and the connections between people, their cultures, and the landscapes they occupy.”
He continues, “Exploring new places allows me to immerse myself in diverse perspectives, traditions, and ways of life, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for our world. The experiences I gain while traveling enrich my life in profound and unexpected ways, leaving me with memories to cherish and lessons to carry forward.”
Saxon’s ability to map connections is something Pathways partner, Darrin Jamieson, recognizes in Saxon’s approach to Indigenous recruitment: “Saxon can find those elements that connect people to roles that may not be obvious at first glance. He’s also able to see the bigger picture in our work – how we contribute to economic reconciliation by finding and placing strategic leaders.”
“Watching Saxon come into his own over the last few years has been really exciting to watch,” comments Pathways partner, Mike Eagar. “He has fantastic potential and really cares about our greater mission of changing the face of leadership in Canada and beyond.”
Saxon’s dedication to this mission, and to his colleagues, comes through loud and clear when you speak with him.
“I feel a profound sense of purpose and unity with my colleagues. Together, we are part of something much larger than ourselves, driven by a shared vision of inclusivity, equity, and authenticity, striving to create meaningful change in the spaces we occupy. Our collective efforts are not only shaping the future of our company but also leaving a lasting impact on the broader community.”
Pathways’ managing partner, Laurie Sterritt, is quick to acknowledge Saxon’s mission-focused passion for the contributions Pathways is making on the Indigenous inclusion and reconciliation journey. In addition to his regular workload—presenting to clients, working with candidates, and writing opportunity profiles—he supports Pathways’ relationship and certification process with the Canadian Council for Indigenous Business.
“Saxon is very proactive in gathering and communicating our progress around our CCIB certification, always ensuring that we stand up to our stated values and commitments,” says Laurie. “He has grown so much in the past couple of years, and it has been a pleasure to witness.”
This is confidence in action and comes from within. Ask Saxon what advice he’d give to someone just starting out in their career, he has this to say: “Amidst all the uncertainty and anxiety – be yourself! Don’t ever waver in that respect. When you are your true, authentic self, you will find where you are meant to be, and will thrive on paths you did not know existed!”
